Design and development of spreadsheets to capture all data required across the mines sites as necessary
Specification of processes unique for individual mine sites
Inclusion of multipliers for internal caculation purposes

2.    Peabody Energy Australia Coal::  Wambo Mine Site - Calculation Algorithm for Automatic Data Capture and Analysis of Underground Mine Fugitive Emissions:

This project was to assist Peabody in the analysis and development of a process to automatically measure and record fugitive emissions (methane and carbon dioxide) released via the ventilation air of the underground mine.  

Specific tasks:
Review of tube bundle gas measuring system,
Specification of calculations required to automatically capture and process gas data
Inclusion of cross checks and decision points relating to data range, accuracy, continuity, required multipliers
Compliance with NGER Legislation and Measurements Determination.
Final report and documents.

Peabody publised a summary of this project in their 2009 EEO Annual Report and it is reproduced here:

The accurate measurement of greenhouse emissions from the Wambo underground operations Is of significant importance to the calculation of EEO project financial returns as it Is anticipated in the future the benefit from EEO projects will come not only from reduced energy usage, but also reduced need for carbon permits for emissions under the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. Wambo underground operations has developed real time monitoring of greenhouse gas emissions for reporting under National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting legislation that will also be used to assess benefit from reduced energy usage In the operations. The software now calculates the total equivalent tonnes of CO2 for CH4 and the total tonnes of CO2 for a specified period, as per the guidelines supplied by the Government The generated totals are in the required format for input Into the Federal Government's Onllne System for Comprehensive Activity Reporting (OSCAR)

Specifically, the software now records values from sensors located on the Tube Bundle Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) which monitor, amongst other things, Temperature, Barometric Pressure, Fan Pressure, Flow, CO2, CH4, CO, and O2.

The advantages of this system are that not only are totals for the sample period displayed, but quantities for each and every sample are displayed and calculated. Three sets of data are displayed:
data for the control tube (outside atmosphere);
data from the ventilation tube; and
the calculated data, which is the ventilation value less the control tube value.
Overall, this provides for highly accurate data for the selected period, as well as allowing the user to monitor the actual values to ensure that there are no anomalies in the data. Typically the calculation of this data can take many hours, even days, but with the use of this system, calculations are performed In a number of seconds, In an easy to use web based environment from any personal computer on the Internal network.
This system will enable Wambo to monitor greenhouse gas emissions in detail that In turn will allow regular review of any possibility to usefully capture some of the emissions, with the aim of reducing on site energy usage or potential generation of energy on site.
This system will also facilitate a detailed analysis and optimisation of the ventilation of the underground mine to reduce energy consumption.
